ALBA is the name of the synchrotron light facility. It is constructed and
operated by the Consortium CELLS, which means Consortium for
the Exploitation of the Synchrotron Light Laboratory. It is co-financed by the
Spanish government and the Catalan government.

CeRMAE - Advanced Materials for the Energy Reference Center
This center was established by the Catalan Government in March 4, 2003.
It congregates seven research groups working in the research of new materials
applied to the production, storage and transportation of energy.
CIRIT - The Interministerial Council for Research and Technological Innovation
The Interministerial Council for Research and Technological Innovation (CIRIT)
is entrusted with the co-ordination and planning of the powers of the Autonomous
Government of Catalonia (Generalitat) with regard to policy for science and
technological innovation.
The CNM is the biggest public center in Spain devoted to the research and
development of microelectronics. It belongs to the High Council of Scientific
Research (CSIC). Three institutes constitute this center: The Microelectronics
Institute of Barcelona (CNM-IMB), The Microelectronics Institute of Madrid
(CNM-IMM) and the Microelectronics Institute of Seville (CNM-IMSE).
CREBEC - Bioengineering Reference Center of Catalonia
This center was established by the Catalan Government in March 4, 2003.
The aim of this center is to coordinate the activities on the multidisciplinary
research in biomedical engineering carried out in Catalonia. The CREBEC is made
up by different departments of the Research Center in Biomedical Engineering
(CREB) in the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), and the Research Center
in Bioelectronics and Nanobioscience (CBEN) of the University of
Barcelona (UB).
The CSIC is a public multisectoral and multidisciplinary organism of research.
It is ascribed to the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Spanish Government.
It has its own legal responsibility and it has research centres in all the Spanish
territory.
DURSI: Ministry of Universities, Research and Information Society of the
Catalan Government
The DURSI is the Ministry of the Catalan Government in charge of planning,
organizing, managing and executing the competencies assigned to the Generalitat
de Catalunya in the area of universities, research and information society.

of the chemical and pharmaceutical companies through the technological
innovation.
The ICMAB is a research centre of the Spanish High Council of Scientific
Research (CSIC). Research is oriented towards the synthesis and characterization
of new materials with technological interest.
ICREA –Catalan Institution of Research and Advanced Studies
This Foundation was created by the Ministry of Universities, Research and
Information Society (DURSI) of the Catalan Government and the Catalan Foundation
for Research and Innovation (FCRI). Its objective is to foster the research in
Catalonia in any branch of learning by enrolling researchers selected at
international level with criteria of scientific excellence. The ICREA researchers
work in universities or other research centers established in Catalonia.
It is a non-profit Association of Economic Interest established by the
High Council of Scientific Researc (CSIC), the Autonomous University of
Barcelona (UAB) and the company Carburos Metálicos. Matgas aims to cover the
demand on R&D in the materials and gas business.
The autonomous communities of Aragon and Catalonia have signed a general
protocol that establishes a collaboration agreement to foster and coordinate
a joint venture in R+D+I in nanocience.
NanoSpain promotes the Spanish Nanotechnology and prompts its commercial
applications. The NanoSpain net enables an exchange of ideas between universities
and companies. Its members come from the administration, the universities and
the industry.

Les Trobades Científiques de la Mediterrània, que organitzen cada any la Societat
Catalana de Física i la Secció de Ciència i Tècnica de l'Institut Menorquí d'Estudis
amb el suport de diverses institucions acadèmiques del seu àmbit lingüístic, tenen com
a objectiu principal proveir un marc adequat a l'intercanvi d'experiències i de
coneixements sobre un tema actual de recerca. A més de constituir un fòrum científic,
contribueixen a facilitar la relació i la comunicació entre els científics i els
tecnòlegs de l'entorn més proper.
L'edició d'enguany, que és l'edició número XXII, estarà dedicada a Nanociència i
Nanotecnologia, en el sentit més ampli possible, incloent activitats en camps on
la utilització de síntesi i funcionalització de nanopartícules, materials, components
i estructures en l'interval nanomètric introdueixen significants avantatges i millores
en les propietats físiques, químiques i biològiques o en els fenòmens i processos que
hi intervenen.
This University was established in 1968. The educational offer covers most
of the fields, from humanities and social sciences, to health sciences,
experimental sciences and engineering. The UAB has 11 faculties and 3 technical
schools.
The Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Series will be an international forum for the presentation of comprehensive nanoscience principles, nanotechnology tools, nanomaterials, nanobiosensors, nanobiotechnology and nanotechnology applications in the environment, in energy, electronics and computers, including discussion of ethical issues in this frontier science and technology.
